The basis of the class will be healthy living and movie analysis.
We will start, while it is cool outside, by playing Frisbee, go cross country running, Yoga or other activities out in nature. Physical activities will be varied enough to be inclusive and interesting to all. We will also work to become mindful by practicing meditation, journal writing and have conversations. The morning activities are centered around understanding ourselves and how to deal with the stresses that come with life.
The middle of the day will consist of a cooking class in which we will plan, cook, serve and eat meals that are healthy and fun.
We will learn about the nutritional value of foods, the histories and science of various ingredients, and the cultural aspects of food. For example, if we have an ethnic lunch that consists of hummus, we would discuss the health impacts of Garbanzo beans, how and where they are grown and the culture of hummus such as the debate surrounding its creation where Israel and Palestine both claim it was their invention.
The rest of the day will be a film analysis class. We will watch entertaining and culturally relevant movies, such as Blade Runner, Schindler’s List, Do the Right Thing, There Will Be Blood and many more and then we will spend time analyzing and reviewing the movies in the form of discussions, essays, poems, music, and artwork.
We will learn the techniques of how to view films in a more critical way, looking for themes and motives that seem to reoccur in all cinema and how they reflected the culture of the time. This summer program will be a great way to relax, be active, learn how to cook, and watch movies!
